New Gate Card System for Dollar Point
by Aidan Miles, Winter 2007
We would like to remind everyone that their gate cards will not be reissued in 2008. Instead, the cards you already have will remain active unless you fail to pay your dues by the March deadline, at which time they will be deactivated.

Notes from the Fire Department
- Can firefighters find your house?
- Can paramedics find your house?
- Can the sheriff find your house?
Don't play Hide and Seek with your emergency services! Help us find you quickly by following these important tips.
- Your house numbers should be clearly visible from the street. Make sure bushes, vehicles, or other things don't block your house numbers. Reflective numbers are best.
- Your house numbers should be in a contrasting color to your house, at least 3 inches high.
- If your house is secluded, mark your address clearly at the head of the driveway.
- Make sure all family members know how to call 911.
Two large fires have recently been caused by improper disposal of ashes from wood stoves. Hot ashes unwittingly placed in trash receptacles have been known to ignite.
Live embers can survive for days when covered with ashes. The ashes remove enough oxygen so the fuel will not flame up and instead it burns very slowly. Even though the fire appears to be out, it can still be active. When you clean out your wood stove or fireplace, place the ashes in a metal can with a tight-fitting lid. The lid does not have to be air tight, just tight enough so the ashes won't spill if the can is overturned accidentally. Place the can on a non-combustible surface and wait 5-7 days before emptying it. If you clean out your firebox once a week, leave the old ashes in the can until the next time you clean out your firebox. This way you will be assured the ashes are cold. Never place your ashes in a box or a paper or plastic bag when you take them out of the firebox. Never place them in you trashcan until they have had 5-7 days to cool off. Ash cans can be purchased at the local hardware store.
Please save the FIRESCAPING CHECKLIST and use it for yearly cleanup on your property.
What do you do if you come face to face with a bear?
Rest assured if you live in Dollar Point, and come face to face with a bear, it is NOT a Grizzly! If you do encounter a bear, remember the following:
- Do not get between a mother and her cub. If you do, slowly move out of the way.
- Always give bears time and space to avoid you. Wait off to the side of a trail if you see a bear crossing ahead of you.
- Never run away from a bear as this may trigger an instinct to chase. Stand tall and slowly back away.
Bears will sometimes 'bluff charge' or 'huff & blow' in an attempt to drive you away. Black bears will climb trees when frightened and will not climb down if humans or dogs are present. Loud noises made by radios, whistles or pots and pans banged together can scare away bears.
Although it is VERY RARE,
if attacked by a black bear, FIGHT BACK!
